My memory of this game is better than it actually is but I did enjoy revisiting it enough to make it worth while. The races themselves are huge luck fests anyway. Collecting animals 10 at a time to feed to the chao, the whole stat raising, it just takes way too long, is too boring and ultimately too tedious to really recommend. It's excessively easy to accidentally attack your chao since the pick up button is mapped to the attack buttons, meanwhile the only character that can safely interact with them is E102 but he can't enter water, so in a room that's 50% water with chao who seem intent on drowning themselves, he can't save them. It's an almighty chore even at the best of times. Many people seem to revere this as the pinnacle of the game but I simply do not understand how or why it receives this level of praise. There's a unique kind of tension in that alone. As janky as the rest of the game is, the fishing is a breath of fresh air, especially if you go for the challenge emblems that require you to reel in the bigger fish. Big's fishing is often derided as terrible and while I can understand that sentiment I will say that upon this revisit I did come away appreciating the ability to slow down that little bit more. Having 6 characters each with their own distinct playstyles is pretty cool too, even if some of them feel so tacked on and forgotten like Amy only receiving 3 stages total against Sonic's 10. Aside from the janky gameplay the rest of the package is fairly decent, music in particular stands out as a highlight.

It's still rather strange to see Sonic in this kind of dull dreary real life environment against the fantastical 2D classic era designs but this was how the series chose to evolve. When it works though I suppose it works well enough.

The game is just an endless parade of little situations like this that cause the enjoyment levels to oscillate wildly between love and hate. Sometimes attempting to attack an enemy will cause you to loop infinitely other times it won't. Sometimes physics will stick you to walls, sometimes it won't. The game can't handle speed at times so it just flings characters off at bizarre angles, other times it'll stop you dead to a pixel of geometry. The long and short of it is this, Sonic Adventure is a janky, janky game even at the best of times, and while it's certainly quite playable for the majority of its run time, you will likely be fighting against it for much of that time. While it was my first time playing the DX version, and I'm aware there are countless changes made to the game in those ports and updates both for better and worse, one thing stood out to me above all else this game did not age well at all. I had played Sonic Adventure originally on the Dreamcast so it was always going to be interesting to revisit it all these years later. Maybe someday I'll come back to this one and see if I can actually figure out how the Chao Garden works next As janky as it is, I think the jank is really an integral part of the game, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting without it. I have a hard time calling this a 'good' game, but it's still so charming while being such an experience to play through that I'm glad I did. Super Sonic is also a really fun way to wrap everything up. I guess someone on the team just really wanted to make a fishing game real bad? Gamma's is probably the best by far, though everything about that story is so much better than the rest that it almost feels like it was pulled from an entirely different game. just doesn't seem to fit into the rest of the game at all.

Tails's story is basically just an abridged version of Sonic's aside from a couple of unique additions, Amy's is WAY too short to feel worthwhile, and Big's. The inclusion of all the different characters' stories to play through is a nice touch, but not implemented anywhere near successful enough. You can tell they were trying to do something special with this game, and. incredible.Īnd yet somehow, beneath all the incredible roughness the transition to 3D brought to the franchise, there's just this genuine sense of earnesty to it all that keeps me from being TOO hard on it. Most of the voice acting sounds like it was done entirely without any kind of direction and the pacing and camera work in cutscenes is just. Most of the time it feels like it's actively resisting your attempts to play it, lodging the camera firmly into a wall or characters doing their own thing totally contrary to your inputs, physics that make no sense and hitboxes that make even less.
